Can You Make Money Online Without Lying?

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Marketers are LiarsI wanted to use the word “honesty” in the title for this blog post, but I expect the word “Lying” will pull more attention. However don’t let that mislead you, this article is about using honesty in your marketing, not lying.

At the start of September you may recall StomperNet offered their Stomping The Search Engines 2 course for the cost of shipping if you were willing to try their new print newsletter. They made money off this offer because of the multiple upsells involved during the ordering process and the potential for rebills if customers decided to stay subscribed to the print newsletter.

I had no problem with this offer, in fact I thought it was a good deal and promptly blogged about it and sent a notice to my newsletter too.

Besides a brief hiccup that killed the opening day, StomperNet did well, and many of you, my readers, grabbed the offer.

A few days later Brad and Andy at StomperNet decided to up the ante a little and with the help of many of their top Internet marketing friends, put together a bonus package that was, well, a little over the top.

Guys like Ed Dale, Jeff Johnson, Jeff Walker, Rich Schefren, Mike Filsaime, Paul Colligan and Shawn Casey (and others) gave everything from teleseminar downloads, audio files, free months in coaching programs, reports and more on top of what was already offered by StomperNet, just for the cost of shipping. That offer has since passed, though you can still buy the course and trial the first month of the newsletter if you pay for sending it to you.

Why Do They Do This?

Bloghology Magazine Issue #1 Debuts At Blog World Expo

Monday, October 13th, 2008

At the time I did this particular interview I didn’t realize it would become so cool, but Mert Erkal and the team at the new Bloghology blog magazine, which debuts at this weekend’s Blog World Expo conference in Las Vegas, decided to feature me on the front cover.

Bloghology Cover Featuring Yaro StarakI’m honored to be featured and I thank head editor Mert for including me in this way, especially for the very first edition.

You can catch my short interview along with interviews with expert bloggers Chris Garret, Guy Kawasaki, John Cow, Garry Conn and Mani Karthik when you get your copy at the expo, or you can go right now and download the digital version from here (you will need to register to read the magazine in entirety) -

Bloghology Magazine Digital Version

The only thing I am disappointed about is that I could not make the expo. I had every intention of going but my new baby brother is coming (along with my dad) all the way from Spain for a brief visit this weekend. This will be the first chance I have to meet him and one of the rare opportunities we are in the same place since we live on opposite sides of the planet. Family before business I’m afraid!

Enjoy the magazine and the expo this weekend everyone!

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Have you been trying to increase traffic to your online business? Maybe you have even thought about hiring a SEO consultant to help you out. Well I’m going to save you lots of money by telling you about Blog Carnivals. Blog Carnivals are the experts best kept secret. Very few online marketers use it and It’s not surprising that their web sites generally get lots of visitors and even prospects. At the end of this post you’ll also find a special gift for any reader of this blog to help you increase traffic to your websites.

Blog Carnivals are free for anyone to utilize. Perform a quick web search on Blog Carnivals and you can start using them right now. They help you build backlinks to your website from other simillar web sites. Not only will you get a lot of extra traffic, you will also get lots of targeted traffic. The best part is that it’s free.

To take advantage of blog carnivals there is only one requirement. You need to have free articles on your website. Informative articles or how to posts work. If you have a blog on your site with articles that also works. If you don’t, then you might want to consider writing free articles. Search engines value fee articles and they will send you lots of free traffic. You can link to your products or other parts of your website from the bottom of those articles or posts.

Once you have a single article, you can visit Blog Carnival’s website. You can scan all the different Blog Carnivals. Try to find a few carnivals related to your article’s topic. So if you article is about weight loss you would try to find health related carnivals. You then basically supply the title and URL of your article to a relevant carnival. The Carnival host generally posts a link to your article on his/her web site within the next few days.

When that blog carnival host’s visitors see the link, many will click it, especially if the article title entices them. Second when the search engine index the carnival host’s site, they will see the link to your website. This will increase your search engine ranking. In otherwords your website will start ranking higher in the search engines, and you will start getting more search engine traffic.

Search engine heavily use links to websites to determine the qualit of a web site. In other words the websites that rank the highest in search engines generally have the lots of incoming links. Blog Carnivals are a great legitimate way to contribute value to others and at the same time increase traffic to your website. Your contributing value by writing quality articles and sharing them with others who might find them informative. Similarly you are increase traffic to your website by increasing incoming links to it.

So you are probably wondering what the catch? Besides if search engine optimization is that easy then why are their consultants charging to do it? Well I don’t know. What I do know is that Blog Carnivals are really that easy to use. I’ve used them with many of my own sites and watched search engine traffic steadily go up.

I recommend that you submit an article to Blog Carnivals once every week. It will take about 30 days and then you will start noticing an increase in your traffic. You will have more search engine traffic. You will also get lots of trageted traffic from the websites hosting the Blog Carnivals. Also, there are Blog Carnivals about all kinds of different topics such as health, business, self improvement, marketing, education, entertainment, relationships, and many other topics. So you don’t have an excuse not to try blog carnivals.

Tips For A Successful Internet Business

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Let’s take a look at Business and Business Philosophy. A business exists to 1) provide a service or product to customers and 2) to make a reasonable profit for the business owner.

In the past this took the form of two kinds of traveling salesman (the itinerant traveling salesman, working out of his wagon or truck, who brought otherwise unavailable products to places who simply could not economically travel the distance required to find those products…and the “drummer”, or “route salesman” who went to the various “fixed location” businesses and sold them their “restocking supplies”) and the “fixed location” businesses (stores) who carried a selection of “most needed” products in their store for customers to come in, select from and purchase.

Pretty much this mode of operation stayed true from the mid 1800’s to the late 1900’s. But by 1990 there was a new inroad into this model of business — and business philosophy. Or was there? And just what was that inroad?

The Inroad was “The Internet”, in existence since the 1960’s, started “going commercial” by about 1990. It is now 2005 and this commercialization is an ongoing and evolving process. Business has changed and is changing. Many fixed location storefronts also have web locations and offer home delivery for online ordering, even for local customers. But how about “Business Philosophy”? It is changing, also? Or is it?

Right now internet businesses are proliferating at an alarming rate. I cannot count and possibly no one can count the total number of internet businesses in the world today. There are probably between 100 and 1000 “new” internet businesses starting every day somewhere in the world, and this figure could be much higher. There even is a “new category” of business which has evolved, sort of to keep track of those businesses.

No, it is not the electronic store front which offers products or services to customers anywhere in the world (though this is a major evolution from a standard “fixed location” real store front on your local street), nor is it the “hosting service” which electronically locates and “displays” your electronic storefront for customers to find. They are not unlike the building owner who sublets space for offices and stores. The new type of business is the “search engine” which “locates, catalogues and categorizes” all of these various business enterprises and allows you to find what you are looking for.

It is said that there are hundreds of different search engines out there, proliferating and multiplying like lemmings…and, like lemmings, falling by the wayside for various inadequacies. Except for the best and biggest. The number one “search engine” is probably Google. However, MSN is gaining and Alexa, All-the-Web, Alta Vista, AOL, Ask Jeeves, Lycos, Matilda, Scrub the Web and a few others may be considered the “major” search engines, those which comprise, say, 95% or more of total search engine use worldwide.

There is possible a second type of “new business” brought to us by the Internet. This is the browser. In fact, the browser and the search engine work hand in hand and are completely different entities. Basically, they generally are set to work hand in hand and mutually complement one another. In fact, in my mind, the search engine is slightly more valuable but less independent.

The Number One Browser is likely to be Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. But there are several more “major” browsers, which include AOL/Netscape, Firefox and Opera, as well as many more. These four probably comprise more than 95% of the worldwide “browser use” on the internet.

You could compare them (very loosely) thusly: look at the search engine as an exquisitely detailed map, showing not only everything that is there by business and location, but everything that is inside those locations — the books and other resources within a library, the entire stock of the local store, all the services of a print shop, etc. And look at the browser as the vehicle that gets you from where you are to the resources, products and services you are looking for. It’s nice to have such a detailed map but the map is useless without the ability to go there and see and use what is there.

The search engine, slightly more valuable in a sense, is not a “stand-alone” item. It requires a browser to be truly functional. The browser, however, is a stand-alone item which benefits mightily by the information the search engine provides. Compare the search-engineless browser to a long trip in a vehicle with an occasional rare find — a resource you may or may not have been looking for.

So for you to be successful in your internet business endeavor you must not only be there — on the internet — and accessible to browsers, you must find a way to “be found” by the search engines and mapped so that the people using the browsers can find you.

To do this you must do several things. You must build your web site cleanly and meeting the “search criteria” of the various “search engines”. Ideally you will want to use a pleasing layout, probably a cascading style sheet, optimize your verbal content for the search engine algorithms and engage the services of someone who really knows how to do this kind of work. You must also carefully, very carefully indeed, select the host for your web site. More on this in the next article, but see my #1 web site below.

I personally recommend Lawrence Deon of http://www.rankingyourwaytothebank.com/
I have seen several resources out there similar to what Lawrence Deon provides and they range in price from triple the cost to more than 10 times the cost…and they don’t do anything that Ranking Your Way To The Bank doesn’t do.

Organic Greens dot US ranks right up in the top 10 for nearly 20 different search terms and on most of the world’s major search engines. This is purely thanks to Lawrence Deon. I have this one up and three more right now in varying stages of construction, all with Lawrence Deon’s help. And I have more web sites up which are designed with thanks to Lawrence Deon.

Do search engines like your Web site?

Saturday, October 4th, 2008
Between 75% and 98.8% of visitors to Web sites come from searches made at search engines. If you’re going to get high levels of traffic - and hence the levels of ROI you’re looking for - it’s very important that the search engines can access all the information on your Web site.

Do the search engines know about all of your pages?

You can find out which pages on your site the search engines know about by using a special search. If you search for ’site:’ and your Web site address, the search engine will tell you all of the pages on your Web site it knows about.

For example, search for: site:webpositioningcentre.co.uk in Google. Yahoo or MSN Search, and it will tell you how many pages they know about.

If the search engines haven’t found some of the pages on your Web site, it is probably because they are having trouble spidering them. (’Spidering’ is when the search engine uses an automated robot to read your Web pages.)

Spiders work by starting off on a page which has been linked to by another Web site, or that has been submitted to the search engine. They then read and follow any links they find on the page, gradually working their way through your whole Web site.

At least, that’s the theory.

The problem is, it’s easy to confuse the spiders - especially as they are designed to be wary of following certain kinds of link.

Links which confuse spiders

If your links are within a large chunk of JavaScript code, the spider may not be able to find them, and will not be able to follow the links to your other pages.

This can happen if you have ‘rollovers’ as your navigation - for instance, pictures that change colour or appearance when you hover your mouse pointer over them. The JavaScript code that makes this happen can be convoluted enough for the spiders to ignore it rather than try to find links inside.

If you think your rollovers are blocking your site from being spidered, you will need to talk to your Web designers about changing the code in to a ‘clean link’ - a standard HTML link, with no extra code around it - that is much easier for the spiders to follow.

Links like these will look something like this:

Home Page

Page addresses to avoid

Spiders will also ignore pages if they don’t like the URL (the address needed to find the page).

For example, a Web site that has URLs containing several variables can cause spiders to ignore the page content. You can spot pages like these as they have a ? in them, and &, for instance:

http://webpositioningcentre.co.uk/index.php?page=12&cat=23&jib=c

This URL has three variables, the parts with the = in them, between the ? and &s. We find that if a page has one variable, or even two, the top search engines will spider them without any problems. But if a URL has more than that, often the search engines will not spider them.

Spiders particularly avoid URLs that look like they have ’session IDs’ in them. They look something like this:

http://webpositioningcentre.co.uk/index.php?page=12&id=29c8d7r2398jk27897a8

The set of numbers and letters do not make much sense to humans, but some Web sites use them to keep track of who you are, as you click through their Web site.

Spiders will generally avoid URLs with Session IDs in them, so if your Web site has them, you need to talk to the people who developed the site about re-writing it so they do not use these IDs, or at least that you can get around the Web site without them.

Clean links = happy spiders

If you use clean, easy to follow links without several variables in them, your Web site should be spidered without problem. There are, of course, many other facets to successful Search Engine Optimization, but if the search engines can’t spider your content, your site will fall at the first hurdle.

Fresh Content Improves Search Engine Optimization

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Many search engine optimization companies will sell you a search engine optimization package that addresses many of the major aspects of search engine optimization. These aspects include, but are not limited to, use of file names, alt tags, h1 tags, keyphrase density, meta tag optimization, link analysis and the like. These are all key aspects of a good search optimization.

However, one problem is that the major search engines (especially Google) not only rank pages upon relevant content (which is determined by the factors listed above, and more), but by fresh content as well. What this means to you is that, even after your site has been “optimized to the max”, your rankings will increase to a certain level and then not go much higher. To get to the top and stay there, your site should deliver fresh, relevant content on a regular basis. Depending upon the nature of your business, your competition, and targeted keyphrases, the rate at which you should add content to your site can vary from monthly to daily.

The delivery of fresh content to your site, in a form that is readable by search engines (i.e. not through the use of javascript, iframes, or the like) requires a dynamic, database driven content management system.

The most cost effective way to achieve this is through the use of a weblog that sits on your server and resides under your domain name. Updating the weblog with rich articles or commentary, broadcasting this information to the internet, and allowing users to post comments, achieves the following:

  1. Increases the number of inbound links to your website
  2. Increases the frequency at which major search engines will spider or crawl your site
  3. Increases interactivity for the web user
  4. Improves your search engine ranking
